Preface

THE FIRST BOOK OF NEPHI

HIS REIGN AND MINISTRY

An account of Lehi and his wife Sariah and his four sons, being called, (beginning at the eldest) Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi. The Lord warns Lehi to depart out of the land of Jerusalem, because he prophesieth unto the people concerning their iniquity and they seek to destroy his life. He taketh three days' journey into the wilderness with his family. Nephi taketh his brethren and returneth to the land of Jerusalem after the record of the Jews. The account of their sufferings. They take the daughters of Ishmael to wife. They take their families and depart into the wilderness. Their sufferings and afflictions in the wilderness. The course of their travels. They come to the large waters. Nephi's brethren rebel against him. He confoundeth them, and buildeth a ship. They call the name of the place Bountiful. They cross the large waters into the promised land, and so forth. This is according to the account of Nephi; or in other words, I, Nephi, wrote this record.

Chapter 10
This revelation had long been hoped for by faithful people throughout the world. One of the first black persons to accept the gospel in Africa was William Paul Daniels, who learned of the Church as early as 1913. He traveled to Utah, where he received a special blessing from President Joseph F. Smith. President Smith promised him that if he remained faithful, he would hold the priesthood in this life or the next. Brother Daniels died in 1936, still a faithful member of the Church, and his daughter had the temple ordinances performed for her father soon after the 1978 revelation on the priesthood. 6

Chapter 6
While most Saints moved to the Rocky Mountains by traveling overland from Nauvoo, a group of Saints from the eastern United States traveled a sea route. On 4 February 1846, 70 men, 68 women, and 100 children boarded the ship Brooklyn and sailed from New York harbor on a 17,000-mile journey to the coast of California. During their voyage two children were born, named Atlantic and Pacific, and 12 people died.

Chapter 39
"If you would have God have mercy on you, have mercy on one another. ... We are full of selfishness; the devil flatters us that we are very righteous, when we are feeding on the faults of others. We can only live by worshiping our God; all must do it for themselves; none can do it for another. How mild the Savior dealt with Peter, saying, 'When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.' [Luke 22:32.] At another time, He said to him, 'Lovest thou me?' and having received Peter's reply, He said, 'Feed my sheep.' [John 21:15-17.] If the sisters [love] the Lord, let them feed the sheep, and not destroy them. ...

Note: Moroni 1-6 In the past, I read the book of Moroni with enthusiasm for being in the “home stretch.” Also, with its familiar words, it made it even easier to read. I now take a different perspective on those writings. I try to picture a man who was very alone. A man who had very little distraction (other than survival!) and much time to ponder. I believe the book of Moroni is more heartfelt than I ever realized in the past. I believe Moroni shares the priesthood ordinances not solely for the instruction of Joseph Smith, but to exhort US and any reader of the Book of Mormon to take part in those ordinances and understand that those who are happiest (ie. the people of 4th Nephi) live as well as they did through such practices. I also believe these passages are shared to fulfill the law of witnesses [ 2 Cor. 13:1 “...In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” ] As I mentioned before, these passages did serve the prophet Joseph Smith in organizing the Church. However, as the prophet, he could have received this through modern revelation. The fact that he DID receive guidance for these ordinances through revelation as well as from Moroni’s writings suggests to me that the book of Moroni stands as an additional witness to the necessity of the fundamental priesthood ordinances.

Moroni 6:1
And now I speak concerning baptism. Behold, elders, priests, and teachers were baptized; and they were not baptized save they brought forth fruit meet that they were worthy of it.
