Because of this, all of us, including those struggling to overcome addictive behaviors such as substance abuse or pornography and those close to them, can know that the Lord will recognize our righteous efforts and will lovingly forgive when repentance is complete, "until seventy times seven." But this does not mean one may willingly return to sin with impunity. (See Mosiah 15:26.)

No one need suppose that this forgiveness comes without repentance. Indeed, the Lord has declared, "I, the Lord, forgive sins unto those who confess their sins before me and ask forgiveness," and then He adds the cautionary qualifier "who have not sinned unto death." (Doctrine and Covenants 64:7.) While the Lord "cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance," (Doctrine and Covenants 1:31; see also verses 32-33; Alma 45:16.) yet He differentiates the relative gravity of some sins. He stipulates there will be no forgiveness for "blasphemy against the Holy Ghost." (Doctrine and Covenants 132:27; see also Matthew 12:31; Luke 12:10.) He declares the gravity of murder (See Exodus 20:13; Mosiah 13:21; Doctrine and Covenants 132:19; Moses 5:31-36.) and emphasizes the seriousness of sexual sin such as adultery. (See Alma 39:5; Doctrine and Covenants 42:24-26.) With regard to repeated serious sexual sin, He makes known the increased difficulty of receiving His forgiveness. (See Doctrine and Covenants 42:22-26, 75-78, 80-82; 63:13-17; 76:103.) And He has said that "he who sins against the greater light shall receive the greater condemnation." (Doctrine and Covenants 82:3; see also John 15:22.) Yet, in His mercy, He allows for improvement over time rather than demanding immediate perfection. Even with the multitude of sins occasioned by the weakness of mortality, as often as we repent and seek His forgiveness, He forgives again and again. (See Moroni 6:8.)

While Joseph was not "guilty of any great or malignant sins," (Joseph Smith-History 1:28.) we do well to remember that with very few exceptions, the Lord's "seventy times seven" does not limit forgiveness according to the seriousness of the sin.

The Savior Wants to Forgive
The Lord loves us and wants us to understand His willingness to forgive. On more than 20 occasions in the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord told those to whom He was speaking, "Thy sins are forgiven thee," or similar words. (See Doctrine and Covenants 20:5-7; 25:3; 29:3; 31:5; 36:1; 50:36; 60:6-7; 61:2; 62:3; 64:1-4, 5-7, 15-17; 75:6-8; 82:1; 84:60-61; 90:1, 6; 108:1; 110:5; 112:3; 124:74-76, 78; 132:50.) On about half of those occasions, the Lord's words were directed specifically to the Prophet Joseph Smith, sometimes addressing him alone, sometimes with others. (See Doctrine and Covenants 20:5-7; 29:3; 60:6-7; 61:2; 62:3; 64:5-7; 84:60-61; 90:1; 110:5; 132:50.) The first of these was recorded in 1830, the last in 1843. Thus, over a span of many years, the Lord told Joseph repeatedly, "Thy sins are forgiven thee."

The Savior Wants to Forgive
Providing an opportunity for the Savior to enlighten our understanding, (See Alma 32:28, 34.) Peter once inquired how many times he should forgive his brother and then asked, "Till seven times?" Surely that would be more than enough. But the Savior's response opened wide the door to His merciful heart: "I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven." (Matthew 18:21-22; emphasis added; see also Luke 17:1-4.)

The Savior Wants to Forgive
In this forgiveness we see the enabling and the redeeming power of the Atonement harmoniously and graciously applied. If we exercise faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the enabling power of His Atonement strengthens us in our moment of need, (See Jacob 4:7; Alma 14:26; Moroni 10:7.) and His redeeming power sanctifies us as we "[put] off the natural man." (Mosiah 3:19; see also 2 Nephi 10:24-25.) This brings hope to all, especially to those who feel that recurring human weakness is beyond the Savior's willingness to help and to save.

The Savior Wants to Forgive
While this truth is readily accepted by all believers, not so easily acknowledged is the essential companion truth: the Savior forgives sins "upon earth" and not just at the Final Judgment. He does not excuse us in our sins. (See 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Alma 11:34, 37; Helaman 5:10-11.) He does not condone our return to past sins. (See 2 Peter 2:20; James 2:10; Doctrine and Covenants 82:7.) But when we repent and obey His gospel, He forgives us. (See Isaiah 1:18; Jeremiah 31:34; Luke 7:36-50; Enos 1:5; Alma 24:10; Moroni 6:8; Doctrine and Covenants 1:32; 58:42-43.)

A Broken Heart and a Contrite Spirit
When we have received a forgiveness of sins, a broken heart serves as a divine shield against temptation. Nephi prayed, "May the gates of hell be shut continually before me, because that my heart is broken and my spirit is contrite!" (2 Nephi 4:32). King Benjamin taught his people that if they would walk in the depths of humility, they might ever rejoice, "be filled with the love of God, and always retain a remission of ... sins" (Mosiah 4:12). When we yield our hearts to the Lord, the attractions of the world simply lose their luster.

A Broken Heart and a Contrite Spirit
When we sin and desire forgiveness, a broken heart and a contrite spirit mean to experience "godly sorrow [that] worketh repentance" (2 Corinthians 7:10). This comes when our desire to be cleansed from sin is so consuming that our hearts ache with sorrow and we yearn to feel at peace with our Father in Heaven. Those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit are willing to do anything and everything that God asks of them, without resistance or resentment. We cease doing things our way and learn to do them God’s way instead. In such a condition of submissiveness, the Atonement can take effect and true repentance can occur. The penitent will then experience the sanctifying power of the Holy Ghost, which will fill them with peace of conscience and the joy of reconciliation with God. In a wondrous union of divine attributes, the same God who teaches us to walk with a broken heart invites us to rejoice and to be of good cheer.

The Healing Power of Forgiveness
Of course, society needs to be protected from hardened criminals, because mercy cannot rob justice. (Alma 42:25.) Bishop Williams addressed this concept so well when he said, "Forgiveness is a source of power. But it does not relieve us of consequences." (Deseret Morning News, Feb. 13, 2007, p. A8.) When tragedy strikes, we should not respond by seeking personal revenge but rather let justice take its course and then let go. It is not easy to let go and empty our hearts of festering resentment. The Savior has offered to all of us a precious peace through His Atonement, but this can come only as we are willing to cast out negative feelings of anger, spite, or revenge. For all of us who forgive "those who trespass against us," (Joseph Smith Translation, Matthew 6:13.) even those who have committed serious crimes, the Atonement brings a measure of peace and comfort.

Sometimes a brother in authority has offended, in some way, one of the members of the Church, probably unknown to himself, and that child of our Father's silently continues to feel hurt, instead of doing as the Lord has commanded, going to the offending man and stating to him, in kindness, the feelings of his heart, and giving that brother an opportunity to say to him, "I am sorry I have offended you, and I desire that you shall forgive me." The result is that, in some instances, we find a resentful feeling existing that has been instigated by Satan. (In Conference Report, Oct. 1905, 27.) [See suggestion 4 on page 253.]

Here in Salt Lake City in 1985, Bishop Steven Christensen, through no fault of his own, was cruelly and senselessly killed by a bomb intended to take his life. He was the son of Mac and Joan Christensen, the husband of Terri, and the father of four children. With his parents' consent, I share what they learned from this experience. After this terrible deed, the news media followed members of the Christensen family around relentlessly. On one occasion this media intrusion offended one of the family members to the point that Steven's father, Mac, had to restrain him. Mac then thought, "This thing will destroy my family if we don't forgive. Venom and hatred will never end if we do not get it out of our system." Healing and peace came as the family cleansed their hearts from anger and were able to forgive the man who took their son's life.

This shocking violence caused great anguish among the Amish but no anger. There was hurt but no hate. Their forgiveness was immediate. Collectively they began to reach out to the milkman's suffering family. As the milkman's family gathered in his home the day after the shootings, an Amish neighbor came over, wrapped his arms around the father of the dead gunman, and said, "We will forgive you." (Lancaster New Era, Oct. 4, 2006, p. A8.) Amish leaders visited the milkman's wife and children to extend their sympathy, their forgiveness, their help, and their love. About half of the mourners at the milkman's funeral were Amish. In turn, the Amish invited the milkman's family to attend the funeral services of the girls who had been killed. A remarkable peace settled on the Amish as their faith sustained them during this crisis.

A 32-year-old milk truck driver lived with his family in their Nickel Mines community. He was not Amish, but his pickup route took him to many Amish dairy farms, where he became known as the quiet milkman. Last October he suddenly lost all reason and control. In his tormented mind he blamed God for the death of his first child and some unsubstantiated memories. He stormed into the Amish school without any provocation, released the boys and adults, and tied up the 10 girls. He shot the girls, killing five and wounding five. Then he took his own life.

What can we all learn from such experiences as these? We need to recognize and acknowledge angry feelings. It will take humility to do this, but if we will get on our knees and ask Heavenly Father for a feeling of forgiveness, He will help us. The Lord requires us "to forgive all men" (D&C 64:10.) for our own good because "hatred retards spiritual growth." (Gospel Themes (1914), 144.) Only as we rid ourselves of hatred and bitterness can the Lord put comfort into our hearts, just as He did for the Amish community, the Christensens, the Cerans, and the Williams family.

The Healing Power of Forgiveness
We recently had two other tragedies here in Utah which demonstrate faith and the healing power of forgiveness. Gary Ceran, whose wife and two children were killed on Christmas Eve when their vehicle was hit by a truck, immediately expressed his forgiveness and concern for the alleged drunk driver. Last February, when a car crashed into Bishop Christopher Williams's vehicle, he had a decision to make, and it was to "unconditionally forgive" the driver who had caused the accident so that the healing process could take place unhampered. (Deseret Morning News, Feb. 13, 2007, p. A1.)

Chapter 23
A close associate of President Smith observed that the ability to forgive was indeed one of his defining attributes: "Truly he forgave all men. He was aware in all of his life of the commandment of God: God will forgive whom he will forgive. As for us, we must forgive all men. He could do that, and then refer the matter to God. As he forgave I am sure he forgot. When one who forgives can forget, then truly that man is an unusual man, indeed a man of God!" (Matthew Cowley, in Conference Report, Apr. 1951, 167.)

For behold, the Lord had blessed them so long with the riches of the world that they had not been stirred up to anger, to wars, nor to bloodshed; therefore they began to set their hearts upon their riches; yea, they began to seek to get gain that they might be lifted up one above another; therefore they began to commit secret murders, and to rob and to plunder, that they might get gain.

I think of our Lord and Exemplar, Jesus Christ, and His short life among the people of Galilee and Jerusalem. I have tried to imagine Him bustling between meetings or multitasking to get a list of urgent things accomplished.
