Note: 3.19.12 Mom shared with me her "being tutored" both on her mission and recently when between sleeping and waking. The first time, on her mission, she was in the mission home between transfers. It was about 2am and she "knew she was being tutored" but was so tired that after a while she prayed that she could just go to sleep. She did. And then since then she's regretted it because she hasn't had that experience again. Then recently, around the time Dad saw the urologist to have his blood work done and he got the good news, Mom again had a "tutoring" experience. When she awoke she kept repeating in her mind "3 Ether 5" so she would remember. Of course, there is no third Ether - so she came to this scripture. We were just on the phone when she was telling me about this and as I read it, I felt more comfort about this whole TV and BYU thing. Also, comfort for Michael. Heavenly Father can do ANYTHING and has worked so many huge miracles in my life! I know that He can and will make the right thing work out. I just want to make sure I'm acting in accordance to His will.

Ether 3:5
Behold, O Lord, thou canst do this. We know that thou art able to show forth great power, which looks small unto the understanding of men.

Note: Elder Oaks, October 2000: From such teachings we conclude that the Final Judgment is not just an evaluation of a sum total of good and evil acts--what we have done. It is an acknowledgment of the final effect of our acts and thoughts--what we have become. It is not enough for anyone just to go through the motions. The commandments, ordinances, and covenants of the gospel are not a list of deposits required to be made in some heavenly account. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a plan that shows us how to become what our Heavenly Father desires us to become.

1 Nephi 15:33
Wherefore, if they should die in their wickedness they must be cast off also, as to the things which are spiritual, which are pertaining to righteousness; wherefore, they must be brought to stand before God, to be judged of their works; and if their works have been filthiness they must needs be filthy; and if they be filthy it must needs be that they cannot dwell in the kingdom of God; if so, the kingdom of God must be filthy also.

1 Nephi 15:24
And I said unto them that it was the word of God; and whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction.

Note: We have all been tempted with that delay. We know from our own experience that President Spencer W. Kimball was right when he wrote: "One of the most serious human defects in all ages is procrastination," and then he defined it: "an unwillingness to accept personal responsibility now" (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, ed. Edward L. Kimball [1982], 48; emphasis in original). And so Satan works on both our desire to think we have no cause to repent and our desire to push anything unpleasant into the future. He has tempted you and me, and those we love, with thoughts like this: "God is so loving; surely He won't hold me personally responsible for mistakes which are simply the result of being human." And then, if that fails, there is the thought that will almost surely come: "Well, I may be responsible to repent, but this is not a good time to start. If I wait, later will be better."

We Follow Jesus Christ
First, consider the Savior's introduction of the sacrament. The Savior knew what was about to befall Him. His sacred, atoning mission, beginning with the War in Heaven in the premortal existence, was about to unfold that evening and the next day. Yet with the trials by His adversaries imminently before Him, there is not the slightest evidence He was preparing a defense against the untrue accusations. The Savior instead introduced the sacred ordinance of the sacrament to His disciples. As I contemplate that solemn occasion, my feelings are deeply touched. Sacrament meeting is the most sacred and holy of all the meetings in the Church. After His Resurrection, the Savior instituted the sacrament among the Nephites. (3 Nephi 18:1-11.) If we are to be His disciples and to be committed members of His Church, we must remember and reverence the sacrament. It allows each of us to express with broken hearts and contrite spirits our willingness to follow the Savior, to repent, and to become a Saint through the Atonement of Christ. (Mosiah 3:19.) The sacrament allows us to witness to God that we will remember His Son and keep His commandments as we renew our baptismal covenant. (Mosiah 18:8-10; Doctrine and Covenants 20:37, 77-79.) This increases our love and appreciation for both the Father and the Son.

The Savior also emphasized love and unity and declared that we would be known as His disciples if we have love one to another. In the face of the eternity-shaping Atonement He was about to undertake, such a commandment requires our obedience. We manifest our love for God when we keep His commandments and serve His children. We don't fully comprehend the Atonement, but we can spend our lives trying to be more loving and kind, regardless of the adversity we face.

How we relate and interact with each other is a measure of our willingness to follow Jesus Christ.

The Power of Covenants
Divine covenants make strong Christians. I urge each one to qualify for and receive all the priesthood ordinances you can and then faithfully keep the promises you have made by covenant. In times of distress, let your covenants be paramount and let your obedience be exact. Then you can ask in faith, nothing wavering, according to your need, and God will answer. He will sustain you as you work and watch. In His own time and way He will stretch forth his hand to you, saying, "Here am I."

The Power of Covenants
1. The Prophet Joseph Smith observed, "As God has designed our happiness - and the happiness of all His creatures, He never has - He never will institute an ordinance or give a commandment to His people that is not calculated in its nature to promote that happiness which He has designed, and which will not end in the greatest amount of good and glory to those who become the recipients of His law and ordinances" (History of the Church, 5:135).

2. Some see only sacrifice and limitations in obedience to the commandments of the new and everlasting covenant, but those who live the experience - who give themselves freely and unreservedly to the covenant life - find greater liberty and fulfillment. When we truly understand, we seek more commandments, not fewer. Each new law or commandment we learn and live is like one more rung or step on a ladder that enables us to climb higher and higher. Truly, the gospel life is the good life.

Remember How Merciful the Lord Hath Been
10. Once when traveling with Elder and Sister Russell M. Nelson, we left our hotel in Bombay, India, to catch a plane for Karachi, Pakistan, and then on to Islamabad. When we got to the chaotic airport, our flight had been canceled. Impatiently, I said to the man at the airline counter, "What do you expect us to do, just give up and go back to the hotel?" He said with great dignity, "Sir, you never go back to the hotel." We rummaged about the airport, found a flight, kept the appointment in Islamabad, and even had a night's sleep. Sometimes life is like that: we are left to press forward and endure frustrated expectations—refusing to "go back to the hotel"! Otherwise, such "give-up-itis" will affect all seasons of life. Besides, the Lord knows how many miles we have to go "before [we] sleep"! ("Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening").

New technology makes it easier than ever to fulfill that responsibility. Temple and family history work is now facilitated by a system known as the "new FamilySearch." () This Internet-based system helps members identify their ancestors, determine what ordinance work needs to be done for them, and prepare their names for the temple. It can be accessed from home, a family history center, () or wherever the Internet is available. The steps are easy to follow. (new.familysearch.org. To register for the first time, you will need your membership number and your confirmation date. You can obtain this information from your ward or branch clerk. Once logged into the system, you can verify that your ancestors are in the system and what temple ordinances are needed. You can identify ancestors who are not now known to you and add them to your family tree. Print out a Family Ordinance Request form to take to the temple and thus open the way for needed ordinances to be performed. )
